WACAN 2008 Annual Appeal

(The next regularly scheduled WACANupdate is Wednesday, December 24.)

December 15, 2008

I feel closest to people who, like you, have an interest in and passion for undoing racism and building a multiracial society. Let me say then, I'm excited by the present political outlook of the country and I believe the moment is significant for the white anti-racist community.

More than a moment, I think we face a period of opportunity. The recent election of Barrack Obama signals a shift in the country toward liberal and progressive causes. Given the problems of the economy, Iraq and Afghanistan, health care and other pressing concerns, it may not be on Obama's agenda to work at undoing racism. But an Obama administration can set a tone simply by reinvigorating civil rights oversight functions.

The opportunity lies in the white anti-racist community reaching out to a wider and white audience and public, educating them about racism, anti-racism, white privilege and white supremacy, and helping white people find the means to change and accommodate to a multiracial world.

You subscribe to the WACANupdate, a free E-magazine, so you must have an interest in the white anti-racist community as a member, an ally, or an observer. I am pleased you have chosen to receive the WACANupdate. Many of you are loyal supporters. Some of you may be new readers who are looking to get involved.

We now have a favorable opportunity to reach out to white people and engage them with anti-racist points of view. A significant number of white people will need sound learning opportunities and advice to make the adjustment to a multiracial world.

Together with its parent, the Center for the Study of White American Culture (Center), WACAN is a leading presence in the white anti-racist community. With us, you join in an organization with 14 years of proven survival under conservative and unsupportive governments. Throughout our history, we have engaged the mainstream, challenged white supremacy, and advocated for a multiracial society. Our long term supporters tell us our programs and approach have value.

Not just value on a societal level. WACAN offers benefits to you. WACANupdate subscribers get a reliable information summary and shared connection through the WACANupdate. Members of WACAN.org can participate in online forums and Hall of Remembrance activities, and view documents in the library.

WACAN is more than online publishing and web operations. We work in collaboration with other white anti-racist organizations to hold face-to-face gatherings of the white anti-racist community. We are co-sponsoring the 5th White Anti-racist Summit, scheduled for April 2009.

In 2009 we'll make it easy for anyone to subscribe to the WACANupdate. And we will include a "send to a friend" feature in each WACANupdate you receive.

We anticipate many new accomplishments in 2009. The Center, WACAN's parent, is venturing into offering online courses. And WACAN's sister organization, Crandall, Dostie & Douglass Books, has 4 titles in the pipeline.

I know times are hard. Yet we are making progress. There is a need for more education and outreach. We must rise to meet that need. Because times are difficult, we have set our Annual Appeal goal at the same level as last year.

Please give WACAN $35 to support our work. If you have need to give less, consider a gift of $5 to $10. If you can afford more, consider a gift of $100. We accept contributions at any time but our fundraising appeal will last for a limited time. Please respond by January 7, 2008.

Sincerely,

Jeff Hitchcock
