| White Anti-racist Summit | ||||||||||||
| The Fourth White Anti-racist Summit, held on April 5 at the White Privilege Conference, was attended by around 70 people, and appears to have been well-received. The summit organizers are still drawing together information about the event. Summit participants (including many WACAN members) can look forward to receiving some feedback and further communication about the event from organizers. Thank you to all the WACAN members who participated and helped make the summit a success. | ||||||||||||

Last week white people in Bermuda were invited to an anti-racist "whites only" forum, as part of the Bermuda Race Relations Initiative (BRRI) launched by the government of Burmuda. The event took place with 60 people attending. Mike Nash, WACAN member and member of Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda (CURB) gave a talk at the forum, titled "A white Bermudian's perspective on race." South Korean cosmetics company uses Nazi imagery in advertising. Universiti Malaya students protest racism. The South African Forum of Black Journalists now welcomes white people. Controversial white South African columnist David Bullard is fired for a racist column (Article 1, Article 2, Article 3). Read his column here. Whites in Zimbabwe, once powerful, may no longer make such good scapegoats. Canadian Minister of Labor says racism hurts economy of Canada. Black women experience racism in the parliament of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland launched anti-racism week. Welsh soccer star, Ryan Giggs, tells of racist taunting through his youth. Racist skinheads display banners in Eastern Pennsylvania. A statue of a South Carolina white supremacist will remain in place, but some call for a historically accurate plaque. Whites fare worst with Alzheimer's disease. Interracial marriage is growing in Toronto. Cultural bias may influence parenting studies, scientist finds. Talking heads show more color. Working-class whites key in Obama-Clinton campaign. USA again signals its displeasure with Durban II. The McLean County (Illinois) YWCA held a Racial Justice Summit. South Carolina legislator, of unnamed race, found with racist, anti-Obama flyer on his desk (Article 1, Article 2). Maybe it's to protect their delicate sensitivities. A Kent State University student wrote a column, titled "I am not a white bitch," criticizing the Black United Students (BUS), claiming she felt unwelcome at their functions, causing a furor that included a call from the FBI, and a high-profile BUS meeting. This lead to an entry in the blog, Resist racism, titled "Why I hate white 'anti-racists." At Swarthmore College, White Women Confronting Racism makes itself known. Portland State University holds its first white studies course. A University of Utah student asks people to think of the privileges we have. The group, Students Against Anti-Black Racism, at the University of Windsor, Ontario, complain of police overreaction to break up a Carribean-them dance party (Article 1, Article 2). The University of Kansas continues to seek racial diversity. A UCLA pro-life group promotes a line of investigation into the racist history, and present practices, of Planned Parenthood. High schools take part in programs against racism in Springfield, MA; River John, Nova Scotia; Peoria, IL; and DeKalb County, GA. Schools in various locations in Tennessee confront racism. "Acting white": A Harvard University study looks at GPA and popularity among high school students from different racial groups.
