WACAN.org 2007 Annual Appeal
December 13, 2007
Dear WACAN member,
Welcome to WACAN.
And who is that?
WACAN is you!
WACAN is 1,252 people strong with
1,200 from the US,
31 from Canada, and
21 from 18 additional countries.
WACAN is you, along with every member, affirming that:
White supremacy has shaped the history, institutions and culture of northern North America (US & Canada).
The present mainstream culture and institutions of northern North America preserve a status of privilege and advantage for white people and impose a status of disadvantage and oppression on people of color.
The racial structure and status quo of northern North America is a white problem. White people created it and it remains in place because of the active and tacit support of white people.
White people have a responsibility and moral imperative to work collectively with one another in alliance with people of color, to transform the racial structure of northern North America from one centered on white values to one centered on multiracial values.
WACAN is about organizing.
WACAN is about media.
WACAN is about you.
You can participate as a reader.
You can participate as a letter writer.
You can send us news. We are particularly interested in grassroots white anti-racist activism and organizing.
You can participate in our Hall of Remembrance program.
You can speak with other members in the WACAN forums.
You can support other white anti-racist groups through WACAN.
Your group can join us in the annual White Anti-racist Summit.
You can join our local activities in the New York/New Jersey area.
You can find interesting and useful books and bound articles from our in-house publisher.
You represent the membership program of the Center for the Study of White American Culture, Inc.
The Center was founded in 1995 and currently operates WACAN as a program. The Center also operates Crandall, Dostie & Douglass Books, Inc., a publishing company.
Under its own name, the Center performs training and consultative services. The Center is governed by a multiracial Board of Trustees and the Center is a 501(c)3 New Jersey nonprofit. I do much of the staff work of the Center, and hearing from the WACAN membership in various ways keeps me grounded in that work.
The Center has been around for 12 years now. Over that time we've crossed paths and shared space with Catalyst Project. Catalyst Project is doing on-the-ground organizing and they are facing an immediate need of support for an ambitious program of training and leadership development. If anyone can do it, Catalyst Project can.
WACAN is sharing our 2007 annual fundraising space with Catalyst Project. One thing that WACAN, as a publisher and information provider, can do is identify worthy efforts by white anti-racist groups and bring them to the attention of a white anti-racist readership. You then have our word that the cause is important and the group has integrity.
I ask that you take a closer look at Catalyst Project and make a donation to their work. The white anti-racist community needs a financial front as well as front line activism. If you have a program of giving, please consider opening it a bit to support the work of Catalyst Project.
So, WACAN, is that all? What else?
WACAN is media. The WACANupdate, our bi-weekly email, is now halfway through its third season. From time to time we've featured topical speakers in the WACAN.org Forums. On December 18, Molly McClure, of Catalyst Project will appear for a 2-week dialogue. Members are invited to submit news, announcements, letters and other material. Our WACANupdate reaches over 1,000 members and that includes you.
WACAN is a provider of information. Our WACAN.org Library and Forums sections contain informative documents and discussions. Our Hall of Remembrance contains historical information. We add to these areas throughout each year.
WACAN is an online presence with WACAN.org. Members join online. WACAN.org offers programming, participatory activities, reference information and discussion.
WACAN offers on-the-ground organizing. We founded the annual White Anti-racist Summit (and Catalyst Project was a co-sponsor of the inaugural event). In 2008 the Summit will meet for the fourth year at the direction of the Summit Coordinating Committee, a collection of four white anti-racist groups.
This year we have begun looking at our region of New York/New Jersey and taken steps toward local organizing as well.
At WACAN, we're trying to make it happen for a lot of folks in the white anti-racist community, including you.
Please give WACAN $35 to support our work. If you have need to give less, consider a gift of $5 to $10. If you can afford more, consider a gift of $100. We accept contributions at any time but our fundraising appeal will last for a limited time. Please respond by January 4, 2008.
Sincerely,
Jeff Hitchcock
