WACAN.org 2007 Spring/summer Appeal
May 31, 2007
Dear reader,
WACAN is working on a book titled Struggling for Direction: Accountability and white anti-racist practice. We expect to have the book out in the winter of 2008. (Advance orders begin this fall.)
Let me tell you about the project. We want to bring some clarity to the concept of accountability. Accountability is a term often used in white anti-racist circles, but there seems to be a lot of confusion about how it actually looks in practice. In particular, what does it mean for white anti-racists to be accountable to people of color?
We have located people and groups who have applied the concept of accountability in their local practice, and asked them to write a description of their lived experiences. Last year we put out a call for chapter proposals and received an enthusiastic response. In fact, we received so many good proposals that we decided to do two books-or a two volume set if you will.
We are now finalizing the chapter lineup for Volume 1 and will complete it soon. We have a tentative lineup for Volume 2, and will finalize that sometime this summer. Once we have the chapter commitments in place, there is still a lot of work to do. Suffice it to say we will be very busy on this project for the next several months.
The books are intended for white anti-racists and allies like you and us. We also hope the books appeal to racial justice activists in general, and to all social justice activists interested in learning more about white anti-racist practice. We anticipate the books will inspire, guide, inform, provide models, open new thinking and approaches, and generally move things ahead by sharing new ideas.
Much of the work on the book project is being done by volunteer help, but we still have real dollar costs that must be covered. Specifically, we need some professional assistance in certain parts of the design and production. Also, we have made a commitment to compensate the writers for their work. Although we are offering very modest amounts to each writing team, together the amounts add up.
Each chapter is being written by one or more persons involved in grassroots white anti-racist organizing. We believe it is important to support the work of these people, and so we have made a commitment to do the fundraising needed to offer a small reward to the writers for their work. This is our only fundraiser between now and December, so we are asking now for your help.
The book is being developed with editorial consultation by the People's Institute for
Survival and Beyond, and a portion of the sale of each book (10% of the list price) will go to the Institute. So you can see, we are spreading the economic benefit of the books among many people and organizations engaged in white anti-racist and allied centers of activity. With your one donation you can support a lot of folks who are involved in the struggle for racial justice.
Please give $35 to support this project. If you have need to give less, consider a gift of $5 to $10. If you can afford more, consider a gift of $100. We accept contributions at any time but our fundraising appeal will last for a limited time. Please respond by June 13, 2007.
Sincerely,
Jeff Hitchcock
