WACANupdate

Hello reader

Now that the season for the WACANupdate is winding down, I hope you've found our bi-weekly emails entertaining, and maybe a little thought-provoking.

The WACANupdate, for those who are new, or still unaware, is an email report of news and other items of interest to the white anti-racist community.

Since October of last year a WACANupdate has appeared on Wednesdays once every two weeks. Two weeks from today we will publish the last WACANupdate prior to our summer break. Next October we'll begin again.

The white anti-racist community/perspective/movement is still trying to discover and define itself. It's been a fun and occasionally enlightening exercise to articulate a perspective and publication that contributes to the emerging white anti-racist point of view.

Spring/summer fund drive

Our spring/summer fundraiser continues. Thank you to those who have contributed.

So far the overall response has been minimal. On reflection, we should have sent our appeal out by separate email. So, tomorrow we'll do that.

In the meantime please enjoy this edition of the WACANupdate.

NEWS ITEMS

In the schools

Have you heard of "Racism Free Zones" in schools? This detailed report describes what they are. In an Indiana middle school a reformed white supremacist stirs some controversy. From Charleston, SC, a white teacher is subjected to a racially hostile environment and wins verdict in Federal court.

Who are you calling a minority?

People of color now total 100 million in the United States, or one-third of the population. Older white people live in a much whiter world than do young white people.

Campus Update

Christian campus groups are attracting Asian students, but this article about UC Berkeley also reflects a racially conscious approach to multiracial settings. At Macalaster College, author Walter Mosley describes his experiences in the predominantly white world of publishing. No longer a rarity, white students find advantages to black schools. Students at the University of Windsor put a stop to a racist dress code. An outside critic talks trash about a University of Colorado course that discusses, among other things, white privilege.

Interracial life

This simple, local story captures the feelings of joy and fulfillment people experience when they are in a truly racially diverse and accepting setting. Vermont may be one of the whitest states in the union, but transracial adoption is making a mark. In Bermuda, discussions of race would be better if only those white folks weren't so polite (and uptight).

Racism in the air

The BBC reports on lingering white supremacy in a Southern town, illustrated by a doubtful prosecution of black youth. In New York, a careful analysis of the media shows blatant bias in news reporting that portrays black people in the least favorable light and positions white people in heroic roles.

Bad white people

An Arizona law officer arrested on drug charges has a white supremacist past. A North Carolina white supremacist pleads guilty to kidnapping. An Idaho man with white supremacist ties commits murder/suicide. With the furor around the Duke lacrosse team dying down, a horrific pair of black-on-white murders in Knoxville has become a rallying point for white supremacists nationwide. A violent white supremacist group grows on the west coast. They often say it was a prank. Maybe this time it was.

ENTERTAINMENT & HUMOR

A critic discusses the racial dynamics of Charm School, a new reality show.

HUMOR: Who is the whitest candidate of all?

HISTORY, HERITAGE & TRANSFORMATION

"God's Judgment of White America" (a recently published excerpt of the December 1963 speech of Malcolm X).

A historical tour of Alcatraz now includes the racial history of the prison.

The legacy of a lynching lasts a lifetime, a new book finds, even when people never talk about it.

OPINION & ANALYSIS

Three new essays from Tim Wise:

Of Bigots and Broken Records: Reflections on the Psycho-Pathology of Racist Thinking

On White Pride and Other Delusions

On the Making of Undeserving Martyrs: Fact and Fiction in the Duke Lacrosse Scandal

Odds and ends

Van Jones talks about the strategic blunder of the green movement ignoring people of color and the white working class.

Pat Buchanan raises an alarmist tirade in the wake of the recent census report that people of color no number 100 million in the US.

Particia J. Williams reveals what happens when an otherwise intelligent outsider with limited first-hand knowledge tries to make sense of racism in America.

Rick Perlstein deconstructs Bush's reference to "those people."

Bennett Gordon acknowledges the Internet has become a haven for racists, but argues it allows anti-racists to raise an organized voice as well. At WACAN, we couldn't agree more.
