WACANupdate

Hello reader

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Yes, today is the day. Hardly a blip on the radar in the USA, today is being honored in Canada and Europe, where anti-racism is highly active, visible, and widely reported.

Mapping Change

Who's doing the work, and where? That's the question asked by the Mapping Change project, a joint effort of AWARE in Los Angeles, and WACAN, based in New Jersey.

Last year at the White Privilege Conference, AWARE circulated forms asking people to identify groups working in white communities to raise awareness and undo the effects of white privilege. Several groups responded, and the results were compiled by AWARE.

WACAN made a commitment to publish the results, and now the first version is available in the members section of WACAN.org.

Mapping Change will be an ongoing project. Current information is incomplete, but as time goes on we will update the listings and add new groups as they identify themselves to us.

NEWS ITEMS

White people are more content to die. They tend to live longer than black people, but the good news is the gap is slowly closing. Around the world, in Australia a paper reports on first contact between white Australians and indigenous people, while in Africa a group of white Canadians seek out traditional spiritual practices.

Campus Watch

Liz Ramirez considers the state of racism at Baruch. The American Journal of Education reports that colleges and universities are looking to international students to increase black representation on campus. At UCLA, Tristan Reed speaks out on white privilege. Victoria Duran, a Latina student at Santa Clara University describes how a recent "South of the Border" party eroded her sense of safety and belonging. At the University of Delaware, a jointly sponsored forum featuring radical black and Latino leaders from the 1960s calls for solidarity. Attendance exceeds expectations as many traveled hours to be present.

Klan, and resistance

The Klan is ready to fight for the (white) right to party at Tarleton State College in Stephensville, Texas, where they rallied in support of a "Jim Crow"-style partly held by Tarleton students on MLK Day this year. They were opposed by hundreds, but not all the counter-protestors made it, courtesy of the local police. Meanwhile, reports of growing Klan activity come from Arizona and Las Vegas. White supremacists disrupt a human rights speech in Idaho. The writings of a Klansman come back to haunt him as he faces trial next month for civil rights era terrorist acts.

ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT

What's Missing?

What does it mean with a Turkish filmmaker just happens to draw an all-white sample of opinion from the now "majority-minority" Orange County, California?

The new film Amazing Grace may tell a good story, but more may be missing than present.

OPINION & ANALYSIS

In a new book, black conservative thinker Thomas Sowell identifies (poor) white culture as cause for black underachievement.

An interesting exchange took place in a Maryland newspaper, started by a column on whiteness by Van Caldwell. One reader praised the column. Another found it "incredibly racist" and "extremely offensive." The first respondent then challenged the second to a debate on the facts, leaving feelings of offense aside.

Les Payne, writing in Newsday, a major New York City area newspaper, explores how New York City police uphold state terrorism.

Diversity.inc keeps pitching in the "White Guy" column, discussing why white people talk to black people in slang. Many respond. Another column covered discussing racism along with equality, and a third column looked at whether white people can be diversity leaders. The latter column drew a heavy response.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

Historian James Oakes has an interesting take on Lincoln's racial politics.
