NEWS ITEMS

White people resisting racism
Thank you WACAN member Larry Yates for bringing this story of an anti-racist action in Virginia to our attention. In the California bay area, white anti-racist activist Max Toth discusses lessons learned from Challenging White Supremacy workshops.

How white people have it better
White people are 5 times less likely as black people to be frisked in New York City and 6 times less likely as blacks and Latinos of comparable means to receive a high cost mortgage. A Vanderbilt professor has found that light-skinned immigrants earn more than dark-skinned immigrants, other factors being equal.

Along racial boundaries
A Stanford study examines how in-group and out-group concerns affect how white people view Affirmative Action policies. In Oakland, California, white middleclass families are returning to the public school system. Tensions between the black community and the gay community have been in the news. Less known are tensions between the gay black community and the gay white community. Finally, what's a white man to do? Bill O'Reilly struggles with the "articulate" thing.

Bad white people
The Klan is on the rise, according to the Anti-defamation League. And who needs someone like this on the block? Florida man gets 14 months for cross burning. In Greenville, 4 white supremacists are charged in murder plot. Two Pennsylvania skinheads get 10 years for harassing a mixed-race couple that led to a bar fight. Reaching back in time, a white supremacist is arrested for a 1964 pair of murders, and Pennsylvania authorities arrest a white supremacist in the murders of two black and homeless men in 1998.

Campus Watch
'Gangsta' parties pop up at Connecticut, Clemsen, and Tarelton State University (Texas), and others. Many plead ignorance. Clemson students apologize. An Arizona co-ed critiques the trend, and a recent party on her campus. An African American professor at MIT goes on a hunger strike. At Duke, a white sophomore struggles with racial terms. Other white students have no inhibition to using them when among their own according to a study at the University of Florida.

VIDEO

Black women, real, and otherwise
We'll begin and end this piece with the voice of authentic black women. In between, a black female impersonator bears some scrutiny.

First, watch Kiri Davis explain how white culture works upon the self-image of black women.

Next watch Chuck Knipp (note: video is a still picture), white gay man, as he impersonates a poor Southern black woman, his character, named "Shirley Q. Liquor." Kwanzaa, BTW, has seven days, not twelve, each dedicated to an important community principle. Knipp has drawn protests. See descriptions in About.com and Wikipedia.

Finally, the second voice of an authentic (non-impersonator) black woman. Jasmyne Cannick, black lesbian, confronts the white gay community for promoting Knipp's act.

ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT

A recent playing of the TV reality series, Big Brother, in Britain has been the center of racial controversy, as the target of slurs emerges victorious.

Why is it always white folks to the rescue? asks Kai Beasley.

Black artists continue a historic trend, crossing into predominantly white music cultures. Examples are Afro-punk and blipsters.

The White Rapper Show got some more press. Jus Rhyme appeared in a micro interview, and show host MC Serch was featured in a longer piece. In another story, white playwright Naomi Wallace discusses writing about race.

Is it funny? You decide. Two humor pieces, one on the recent M. L. King holiday and the other a "top ten reasons" list.

OPINION & ANALYSIS

Knocking the white folks
Sometimes it seems like everyone is trashing white people, when we're really no better or worse than others, or so says Peter Laurie. He may be right. Consider what was out there this week. Robert Jensen asked, "What to do about white folks?" Lafe Tolliver wants white folks to behave better. Travis Nicholson lists many beneficial contributions of white people to society. David Rodenhiser sees through the white male veil as people of color discuss racism. Rajeev Ravisankar points to structural benefits for white society as contributing factors to poverty. And Luke Visconti comments on how white men fit into a multiracial employment environment. With all that advice being leveled at white folks, it may be a relief to see we're not the only race getting it from our own; as Bill Cosby drops another critique on black folks.

Politics, new and old.
Why do white people like Barack Obama? Peter Beinart speculates. In the meantime, what was the "articulate" thing all about? Eugene Robinson explains. On a grander scale, Edward Strong discusses how racism and capitalism developed hand in hand.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

Another historical photo op saved for white folks only. Did you know the United States made France remove people of color from the French troops that liberated Paris? And Garret Matthews looks back with a remarkably blunt honesty about how Jim Crow relied on passive white people in a racist society.
