Talk with AR-15 (5 days left)

Jus Rhyme, of AR-15, says..
I come from a political tradition that honors the expertise of people targeted by systems of oppression in the fight against such systems (ie people of color being "experts" on racism, women being "experts" on sexism, etc.) What does leadership in white anti-racist circles look like then?

NEWS ITEMS

Campus WATCH
The holidays have slowed reports from campuses. Fifty students from a midwestern university will take part in a 3-day retreat discussing white privilege. In a New Mexico town aptly named "Truth or Consequences" high school administrators face loss of their teaching credentials for approving a student project on racism. A Canadian university has cancelled a debate after finding invited guest, Jared Taylor, of Virginia, espouses white separatism and supremacy. Taylor says he does not promote hate, and he's coming to Canada anyway.

Bad white people
Can a mixed-race man be a white supremacist? It happened in Boston. His sentence was lengthened, while his girlfriend accomplice recants and gets a break. Also in Boston, a Coast Guardsman receives time for hate activities. A white supremacist gang threatens a prosecutor in California, leading to a massive roundup. Says one neighbor, their house "has the most Christmas lights in the neighborhood." Near Los Angeles, four men on their way to a white supremacist rally attempt to murder two black men. Hey, what's wrong with a little party? Facists force cancellation of an anti-racist music bash. And taking the award for brazen politics, a neo-Nazi group in Michigan describes its plan for leafleting local towns. Calling for schools without "jibbering non-whites," they say it's not hate.

Odds and ends
White folks play the race card with each other. Big time college sports remain white at the top. Vitamin D helps white people avoid multiple sclerosis. Could it be coincidence? A major meat packer upgrades wages and hires more white people while Feds sweep plants, arresting 1300, mostly Hispanic, workers. In Jacksonville, FL, a majority of white people now think racism is a problem.

Feature stories
In Maine, the complexion of the population is changing. Further north, in Canada, officials deny racial profiling that academics say is widespread. A county child welfare agency struggles with racial disparities, training case workers about "white guilt." Slaves' folktales reveal an alternative view of white culture.

Catholic archbishop apologizes for church racism
In a comprehensive "Letter on Racial Harmony," New Orleanns archbishop Alfred C. Hughes, cites white privilege as part of the problem.

ARTS and ENTERTAINMENT

CNN special on race draws rating
Earlier this month CNN aired a program on race, hosted by Paula Zahn. Reaction was intense, and so the network aired a second show the following day. In the wake of the show, a group of black "activists" issued a press release in defense of white people. A black syndicated columnist complained the show reinforced the idea that blacks cannot be held to the same standard as whites. The show did a segment on the sundown town of Vidor, TX. Reaction from Texas was mixed. Some pointed out that racism is a national problem.

Other stories
New movie examines whiteness in Africa. You could hardly miss the Donald Trump-Miss Universe story earlier this month. Was it an exercise of white privilege, at the expense of the black runner up who stood in the wings? In the world of literature and beyond, whiteness may be going out of vogue with browness coming in.

OPINION & ANALYSIS

White columnist in Philly puts it directly
Alfred Lubrano, a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, wrote a column on the new racism. When reader reaction asked why he didn't talk about "black racism," Lambrano replied with a second column, titled "Listen up, white folks: Your racism cuts deeper." Reader reaction to both columns was mixed.

Other opinions
A pundit raises the alarm: Latinos are prejudiced against white people. • white anti-racism is a fragile flower • white America, get over O.J. • belief in racism an article of faith among "good whites" • are black people the problem, or is it white supremacy? • White male progressives: confusing identity and justice • Congress remains white • Robert Jensen discusses the English language and how it fits in the American psyche
