WACAN's Spring/Summer season ends Wednesday

Thanks, it's been good.
We packed a lot into this update. Look for one final, brief email on Wednesday when we sign off from our spring/summer season. We'll begin a new season in the fall, in October.

A special thank you to WACAN members who have brought news and feature items to our attention. Keep sending us what you find.

NEWS and FEATURES

Racism, Europe, and the World Cup
Some white Europeans have shown a disturbing public tendency to harrass non-white soccer players, using racist terms and symbols. In Germany, neo-Nazi activity threatens to disrupt World Cup events. European anti-racist groups oppose the growing presence of hate speech. CLICK HERE
Racial profiling in Rhode Island
Same old. Same old. Police stop and search people of color when white folks are more likely suspects. But one town, Narragansett, does it right. CLICK HERE
Young white sisters spread racist hate
Making it big in the shrinking but unapologetic community of avowed white supremacists, Lamb and Lynx Gaede perform as the singing duo "Prussian Blue." These "blue-eyed" sisters likely won't contribute to building a multiracial society. CLICK HERE
New generation doesn't blink at interracial relationships
Young people of all racial backgrounds are mixing with one another in a colorblind world where races doesn't matter. But it does matter, and some worry that interracial interaction, dating and friendship ignores structural racism and inequality. White youth, in particular, are susceptible. CLICK HERE

OPINION & ANALYSIS

Why DivesityInc May issue is institutional racism
Professor Vernelia Randall critiques the May issue of DiversityInc, which makes the unsupportable claim that class disparities exist in health care, but racial disparities do not. CLICK HERE

WACAN Editorial Briefs

Thank you, Ida Hakim and CURE
The dialogue on reparations you brought to us has been a joy and a learning experience. Thank you for stepping up as guest facilitator in the WACAN Forums this Spring/Summer 2006 season.

Surprising poll results hint at who we are
More than half the respondants to our recent poll say they are members of a white anti-racist group other than WACAN. And more people responded to this poll (76 responses) than to any other WACAN poll in the past. The previous record was 54 responses. Almost 7 out of 10 members either are in a group, or want to start one. Something is happening out there.
