(From the Whiteness Theory list)

Dear list members,

On May 2-5, 2007, the third annual Qualitative Inquiry conference will be held at the University of Illinois at U-C. Here is the link: http://www.qi2007.org/

One of the themes that the organizers would like to highlight is critical whiteness inquiry; they have asked that word about the conference and this theme be spread to anyone who might be interested. So please feel free to forward the link and the cfp. If anyone would like the attachment as a separate document, please write to me individually and I can send it to you. The list software won't accept attachments, though, so I will just read the cfp into this post. (See below.) Hope many of you are interested!

The Third International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry will take place at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from May 2-5, 2007.

The theme is "Qualitative Inquiry and the Politics of Evidence." Participants will explore the politics of evidence and truth and what these terms mean for qualitative inquiry in this new century.

This year’s conference features a special plenary session on the critical studies of whiteness, featuring Charles Gallagher, Georgia State University; Amanda Lewis, University of Illinois at Chicago; Pamela Perry, University of California, Santa Cruz; and Audrey Thompson, University of Utah. It will be chaired by David Roediger of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The conference has organized the panel because it sees whiteness studies as a key site to expose and resist dominant notions of truth, justice, healing, health, schooling, identity, learning and teaching. In addition to the plenary session, the congress is inviting other papers and panel proposals on the critical studies of whiteness.

Possible paper subjects include — but are no by no means limited to — interviewing whites about their whiteness and privilege; examining white identities; helping whites see and acknowledge their privilege; challenges in researching whiteness; teaching whiteness; and personal stories or narratives about coming to terms with whiteness.

Half-day (morning and afternoon) pre-conference, professional workshops will be held on May 3. The Congress will also consist of keynote, plenary, spotlight, featured, regular and poster sessions. There will be an opening reception and barbeque, and a closing old-fashioned Midwest cook-out.

Submissions will be accepted online only from October 1 until December 1 2006. Conference and workshop registration will begin December 1, 2006.
