Introduction

This book will sample a range of opinion, rooted in practice and informed by theory, on the meaning of “accountability” as it applies to white anti-racists and the work they do. In particular, the book will look at how white-led, white populated and white-identified activist groups have responded to calls that they be accountable to people of color in the struggle for racial justice and healing. It is intended to be a resource in regard to models, best practices, and historical and contemporary perspectives on accountability and white anti-racist practice.

Overall Objectives

Our goal is to provide (1) a multi-perspective discussion about the nature of accountability as it applies to white anti-racism and (2) compile models for accountability from white anti-racist activists and the allies of color who support their efforts.  This book is intended first and foremost to inform, inspire and assist these activists in their pursuit of racial justice.

It is our hope that the book will also find an audience in the multiracial community, this being the broader community of people who live and work among people of different races, and who are working towards undoing racism. The topic of accountability and white anti-racist practice should prove informative and useful to them as well.

This book is also intended for activists who work in mono-racial settings.  We hope that it will convey insight into some of the working concerns of white anti-racism and foster collaboration in racial justice work.

Approach

In pursuit of these goals and on behalf of these constituencies, we are seeking voices spanning generations, socioeconomic class, and other categories of social difference.  We will consider a variety of written styles including poetry and simple line art.

Examples of topics and themes

Why is accountability necessary in anti-racist work?

Living case studies: Describe the manner in which your group has applied the concept of accountability to your organizing / activism.

Living case studies: What can happen when groups do not make accountability part of their activism?

Accountability:  Who does the work?  When building accountable relationships, how much of the effort to develop the relationship bears upon the white activist(s) and how much on the people of color to whom the white activists are accountable?  Is accountability a “one way” or a “two way” street, or some combination of the two?  Can there be accountability when no relationship is present?

What would a power analysis of white anti-racism show? What does it suggest for accountability?

Accountability between whites in the anti-racist movement.

Euro-American definitions of accountability (and how they can impact on white anti-racist organizing efforts).

Accountability to anti-racist principles in racial justice organizing.

Historical:

Who called for white organizing to be accountable to people of color?

Who answered the call for white organizing to be accountable to people of color?

How do white anti-racists feel about being accountable to people of color?
