What is it?

The Hall of Remembrance and Commemoration celebrates the lives and efforts of white people who stood against racism, racial injustice, and all the many reprehensible acts of dominance and oppression associated with the history of the European conquest of the world. In particular, the Hall focuses on white people in North America.

The Hall of Remembrance and Commemoration celebrates the lives and efforts of people of color who have worked in relationship, inspired, guided, led and supported white people who have stood against racism and racial injustice.

Why do it?

The past is guide to the present in so many ways. Many white people have resisted racism. But society does not hold them up as models. It is as though their efforts were unimportant and unnecessary. White people today absorb that lesson. Few can name anyone besides John Brown who dedicated their lives to the struggle for racial justice and equality.

How will it be done?

Each year WACAN will hold an election process through which WACAN members will nominate and elect a small number of historic figures for entry into the hall. Nominations must be posthumous. WACAN will maintain a web page offering information about the people in the Hall. WACAN may pursue additional educational projects that draw upon the Hall. These projects might include expansion of the hall display to other medium, such as physical museum space, or a printed work such as a book. WACAN will also use the Hall as a center for advocacy regarding the importance of recovering the history of white resistance to racism.

Categories: Era, Racial location

The Hall will be arranged in to catagories meaningful to its purpose. The first category is historical era. The following time periods comprise this category: Seventeenth century and prior (1699 AD and prior); Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries (1700 AD to 1899 AD); and Twentieth and Twenty-First centuries (1900 AD to present).

The second category is racial location. The hall will distinguish between white people and people of color, recognizing that these two groups are located differently in regard to the history of racism, privilege and oppression.

Nominations

Nominations may be made by any WACAN member. You must be a WACAN member to make a nomination. Nominations will be made in the Forums section of www.WACAN.org in the Fall of each year.
